Tom
Hanson - Walking Stick Carver
Tom gave his usual excellent talk and
demonstration. This time it was a mouse, and any similarity to previous
carving of a mole was deliberate. There is a certain shape of walking stick
top that is comfortable to the hand, and tom fits his animals, as far as it is
possible, into that general shape . By the end of only 2 hours or so he had
turned a band sawn blank into a very respectable carved mouse although there was
still some work needed before it would come up to Tom's high
standards.
One interesting side issue he raised was the question of
making mistakes. He says he makes more than most carvers because he is
working very quickly. He has therefore learnt how to recover from his
mistakes. Hobbiest carvers need however to learn how to carve properly. So
when they make a mistake they should put that piece to one side, and work out
what they did wrong. Then start with a fresh piece of wood, and carve on past
where they made the mistake the last time. If they make another mistake, they
should repeat the process with more new wood, and so on. This may seem
expensive in wood but is a good learning process.
