Experience Started carving aged 8 and was basically self taught until I did a B.A. in Sculpture at the age of 55. Now I make money although not a living from commissions - large chainsaw carvings from standing trees and more intimate sculptures for private and corporate clients.

Richard has been a keen amateur woodworker for more than 50 years, but started to take an interest in carving on retirement, at the time Lancashire and Cheshire Woodcarvers began. Although he has produced a variety of work, he particularly enjoys doing relief carvings. Natural History is another interest, so it is no surprise that wild-life themes often appear in his pieces, although humorous subjects also appeal.
I have always been interested in working in wood since school days. After I retired in 2001, I joined a Lifelong Learning class in Oldham, and later the Lancashire & Cheshire Woodcarvers and the Spotland Woodcarving group. I get my ideas from all different places, challenge myself with all kinds of subjects, and all types of wood that I come across.

I have been a member of the L & C Woodcarvers for just one year, and have found fellow members most encouraging in all aspects of the club and its aims. For many years I have had a desire to carve / sculpt in wood. It was as a result of a casual visit to the Salmesbury Hall Hotel that I was able to see an exhibition of superb carvings by LCW members. This really fired up my desire to do something about it, and much to my surprise, I learnt that there was a club on my doorstep.
