2006, Visit to West Yorkshire Woodcarvers, Huddersfield,
Demonstration
of Stone carving by Jonathon Al butt Stonemason, Carver, Sculptor,
& Lettercarver
We had a good day at Huddersfield, with an excellent talk and
demonstration from Jonathon Al butt. There are obvious
differences between working in stone and wood; basically in the way
that the material splits. Wood tends to split along the
grain but stone is generally more predictablely splits only in front of
the tool. His letter carving was a joy to watch.
I have tried in wood and found it a nerve racking experience.
He has 22 years experience and the letters seemed
to flow from his chisels. His " quick rough "carving of a
rose left us spell bound.
